5 Best Sheets

It’s estimated one-third of our lives is spent between our sheets.  Sleep is an unavoidable bedfellow.  At the end of a long day, there is nothing more satisfying than slipping into bed for rest and relaxation.  However, no one wants to sleep on scratchy poor quality sheets.  A bed outfitted with soft, smooth sheets is a pleasurable experience that can enhance your rest and comfort. This article will review some of the best sheets you can find.

Although sheets are a necessary part of our lives, many people know little about how to select them.  With so many options on the market, it also can be hard to make a choice.  If you have finally decided to upgrade your sleeping situation, this review is for you.  We have dug through the web, read countless reviews, and compiled a list of the five best sheets you can buy.  There is something on our top five list for every budget and style.

Bed Sheet FAQ’s

1. Is Higher A Thread Count Always Better?

There is a common belief that the most important aspect of picking sheets is the thread count.  Thread count is how many threads run vertically and horizontally in one square inch of fabric.   While thread count is important, there are other factors that play a larger role in the quality of sheets. The most prominent of those is the type of fabric used.

There is no reason to pay additional money for a sheet set that has a high thread count of a poor quality fabric. However, it is worth it to spend additional money on higher quality cotton like Pima, Egyptian, or Supima. They have long-fibers and are the softest, most comfortable sheets.

2. What Are The Types Of Weaves Available?

There are two basic weaves: percale and sateen. Percale sheets have the same number of threads running horizontally and vertically. The threads are tightly woven giving the sheets a crisp, cool feel. Percale sheets are durable and strong.  Ideally, they will have a thread count of 200 to 400 for lightweight sheets and 400 to 600 for heavier weighted sheet sets.

Sateen sheets, which are different from satin, have more threads running vertically than horizontally.  The fabric is soft and silky with a slight sheen.  They are more delicate than percale bedding, and prone to pilling when washed. Choosing a thread count of 300 to 600 is best for sateen sheet sets.

3. How Long Do Bed Sheets Last?

Fine linens will last a number of years, while low-grade cotton will wear quicker. Exposure to high temperatures can make fibers brittle more susceptible to breakage. Stubble from shaved body hair can prematurely wear the sheets.  Laundry detergents with harsh chemicals can also impact the life span of sheets. With that said, a good set of sheets should last six to eight years. That can be extended to up to twelve with proper care.

4. Will Sateen Sheets Lose Their Luster?

Sateen sheets are not satin.  They will lose luster after they are washed. However, if you iron them, you can restore their sheen.  Ironing is beneficial because it lays down the natural nap of the fiber. Another reason to iron them is to make them feel smother to your skin.  You can have sheets professionally laundered, but we advise against dry cleaning.  Dry cleaning uses harsh chemicals that will damage your sheet fabric.

5. What Is The dDfference Between A Pillowcase And A Pillow Sham?

Pillowcases and pillow shams are similar, but not the same. Pillowcases are utilitarian and made from sheet weight fabric.  Shams are decorative and generally a heavier weight. Pillowcases are open at one end and have a flange at the opening.  Shams normally have a tuck flap on the back and sides finished with flange or cording. Pillowcases are mostly limited to standard and king sizes. Queen sizes are hard to find. Shams are available in a wider variety including: Standard (20" x 26"), King (20" x 36"), Euro (26" x 26"), Queen (20" x 30"), Boudoir (12" x 16").

How We Reviewed The Best Sheets

We sorted through a variety of brands when coming up with our best sheets list. The products we picked have high user confidence and are good deals at their respective price points.  The sheets we reviewed have been rated on the following parameters: features, pros and cons, price, where to buy, and warranty.  Our reviews and commentary are unbiased, and no brands paid or provided product to be included on our list.

Overall Price Range Of Bed Sheets

Bed sheets range in price from under twenty dollars for a queen sized set to over two thousand dollars.  The sweet point is somewhere in the middle.  Cheaper cotton sheets will wear quickly because the fibers are short.  Short fibers break away every time the sheets are washed.  Spending thousands of dollars on sheets can be excessive.  However, higher quality sheets can last you ten to twelve years.   The sheets on our list range from around 25 dollars to five hundred dollars, so there is something for everyone.
