Top 10 Best Mattresses Buying Guide and Reviews—2019

It takes a great deal of time searching for a new mattress whether in person at a store or online. It takes even more time when you find one that you think is right for you and find it’s only partially right. When you wake up achy or tired, or sore with back pain, your mattress is sagging or has lumps, it’s time to buy a new one. Why run around town to find a mattress when you can buy them right here on Amazon.com®?

You might have good reasons to buy new mattresses: the kids have outgrown their twin-size bed, you’re moving and this is a good chance to replace the old mattress, you recently married your partner wants a king or queen, or you’re just starting out on your own needing a new bed because your stay at your parent’s house is now a guest room minus the bed you took when you moved out.

We will do our best to answer your questions and focus on things you might not have considered yet. We will review mattresses for durability, support, and comfort. This guide will help you choose among memory foam, latex, gel memory foam, and innerspring mattresses.

[h3line h3-text=”1. Mattress Sizes“]

Mattress sizes are shown below. You can determine the height of the mattress after checking specifications. The dimensions are width by length in inches in the USA. The twin is about half the width of the king size. The most popular selling mattress today is the queen size. There are other sizes available such as the extra-long twin and the California king. Other countries and cultures might use sizes that are not listed in the USA.

Know the different materials used in the manufacturing of mattresses discussed in this guide to understand what you need to know before buying your new mattress. The materials that a mattress is made from is what helps back pain whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach.

[h3line h3-text=”2. Mattress Foundation Materials“]

The inner materials of the mattress offer owner satisfaction when looking to buy for:

Memory foam and latex can be similar in the way they feel in most ways. Both are soft but supportive, and both conform to the contours of your body resulting in greater back pain relief and reduced pain associated with pressure points.

  • Memory Foam

During the 1960s, NASA developed memory foam for the astronauts. Mattress manufacturers realized this material would benefit people on the Earth too! —and be prosperous for them. Memory foam is also used in bed pillows, cushions, and for back support.

Memory foam contours to your body’s shape. Gel memory foam provides you with a deeper and more restful sleep that alleviates painful pressure points and your joints will be comforted with the support that cuddles. It goes back to its original shape once you remove your body.

  • Latex

Mattresses made of latex have been popular for years and are ever increasing in popularity. They are environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic providing excellent support for your sleeping.

Natural latex is the sap from nature’s rubber tree. It is supportive and resilient, yet plush. It helps those with sensitive and achy backs with its strong, bouncy, and supple feel.

Latex can also be made from chemically created petroleum-based products.

Blends and fillers are also used in a blend of natural and synthetic latex.

  • Latex gives support and durability comparable to memory foam.
  • A good quality latex mattress will last you from 10 to 20 years.
  • Latex conforms less to your body than a memory foam mattress.
  • The recovery time of going back to its original shape is quicker than memory foam.
  • With latex, you will not feel as hot and it’s easier to shift body positions.
  • Latex relieves pressure points and distributes body weight evenly for good sleeping.
  • Innersprings

Innerspring mattresses arose in the 1860s. The springs became old and weak, rusted, and poked you through the flimsy design of a mattress on top that had lumps and sagged. Some padded thin mattress sat on top of the springs directly that sat on a wood or metal frame with slats. Some had no springs and the mattress sat directly on wood slats. When you turned over too quickly, the slats would fall out taking the mattress with it to the floor. Think of the Victorian brass or metal beds. Today those are trendy, but used with today’s high-end mattress and frames. Only the headboard and footboard retain the charm of the gone by era.

Innerspring mattresses made today have an inner core, coil, or spring. Initially, they were bare springs under a top fabric. About 80% of all mattresses are innerspring and almost everyone has slept on them. They are more expensive than other types but the coils provide the main support for your body. That great support is essential for sleeping well to have a properly aligned and healthy spine. The quality is dependent upon the wire gauge of the coils, not the number of coils. The heavier the coils the firmer the mattress will be. Springer mattresses are made from lighter weight coils. You will have superior comfort from coils and with gel memory foam.

  • Mattress Padding

Extreme comfort in a mattress is provided by the padding. The top padding with spring coils is superior in quality. Padding can be made from polyurethane foam, polyester that is puffed up, or 100% cotton batting. With extensive padding the mattress will cost more but is well worth it for comfort and spine alignment. The top layer is sometimes called the “ticking” and is usually a cotton-polyester blend or rayon bamboo.

  • Middle Padding

Under the top quilted layer, the middle padding layer is usually made of foam that is softer and might feel moist when you touch it. A firmer foam will not bounce back as quickly and cotton batting is usually the next layer down. Polyester, bamboo, or organic wool are often used for the batting. Most consumers favor the lofty cotton. Batting gives an additional layer of comfort and can vary in thickness within one mattress. It might be recognized in one area of the mattress feeling firmer in the middle.

  • Insulation Padding

This protection layer is on top of the coil innersprings so that that you don’t feel the coils under your body. It also prevents the top mattress layers from being damaged by the coils.

  • Quilting

Quilting is done on the outer top layer. Always check for stitching uniformity and no broken or bunched up threads due to a bad bobbin on the sewing machine. Be sure the stitches are even and uniform with a polyester or nylon thread. Cotton thread wears and tends to break over time.

  • Foundation
Murphy bed

The supporting structure for the mattress to sit on is the foundation. It can be existing box springs or new box springs, platform bed, or bed frame with slats that are at least spaced 3-inches apart. Some will even fit a Murphy bed in the wall that folds out. The life of your mattress will be extended with a good foundation. Your mattress might feel firmer with a wood frame than a frame with springs. A house needs a strong foundation to support the upper structure and so does your mattress.

  • Foam Mattresses

A good replacement for a worn out or contemporary mattress is latex and foam types. They come in different densities and are made with a foam core and some are made with many layers of foam held together being made so they won’t slip or move about. Foam mattresses are provided in many different firmness levels for many choices to select from.

Firm or Soft?

Mattresses are rated using the Comfort Scale with a number from 1 to 10, with 1 being the firmest and 10 being the softest.

Most all people can sleep on all mattresses whether firm, medium, or soft. The two most important things to consider when buying a memory foam mattress are:

  • ILD Rating and
  • Density

Try to find the density of the foam with the ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) because memory foam comfort will vary. Not all manufacturers give the ILD ratings. If in person shopping, be sure to get the number and ask for an explanation. Ratings are not provided for innerspring mattresses.

  • ILD Rating

As said above, the ILD rating will let you know how soft or firm the mattress material is. This is an important consideration for your overall comfort.

The number of pounds of pressure needed to indent 4-inches of foam by 25% using a 50-square inch of indentation is the ILD. If the foam is rated at 15-pounds ILD, it means the foam needed 15-pounds of pressure to indent it 25%. A 25-pound ILD means it needs 25-pounds of pressure to indent it by 25%. Therefore, a firmer foam will have a higher ILD.

You might see IFD (Indentation Force Deflection).  This is similar to ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) but ILD is used for measuring polyurethane foam.  Read about IFD here.

It might seem confusing that a lower ILD rating on the top layer of memory foam benefits relieving pressure point pain. The downside is if the top ILD is too soft or too thick. It might lack the best support underneath for those suffering from low back pain. Many manufacturers of memory foam use layering techniques to avoid this problem to have the surface be more pliable and flexible. This will help reduce pressure point pain by distributing foam to be supportive and sturdy over the entire mattress. This is done by increasing the firmness of the layers underneath with the final bottom layer to be the most flexible and durable. Variations in ratings occur from one foam batch to another during processing. A 10 ILD rated foam can vary from 8 to 12 ILD each time a foam is poured. This can also fluctuate depending on the environment and temperature the foam is in before testing.

When you use the ILD and density numbers of the foam you will have a better idea of the general quality and makeup of the foam for the mattress you are considering.

  • Density (Weight)

The density or weight is measured in pounds per square foot (lb/ft2 or psf). This again is governed by the amount of chemicals used in the polyurethane foam; the more chemicals, the higher the density. This contributes to how the visco-elastic finished product will be. The density does not establish the hardness of the mattress material. This is determined by knowing the ILD rating and how it is measured. Memory foam mattresses normally use a 4- and 5-pound density. However, some memory foam manufacturers state 1-, 2-, and 3-pound densities. It’s best not to consider any foam under 4-pound density.

  • How “Memory” Foam Get its Memory

With the many aspects in the process of making the foam, it’s a good idea to be familiar with a few of the factors of how foams are graded. The fabricate raw polyurethane material adds certain chemicals that will increase the density of the foam. The will create visco-elastic foam that has both viscous and elastic qualities that were designed initially for space flight. It is not toxic and is called “memory foam” or “visco-elastic memory foam.” Both names are the same foam product being identical to each other.

[h3line h3-text=”3. Grading Foam“]

Visco-elastic must have the ability to return to its original shape after being on it. It needs to be sensitive to body temperature. The quality and durability of the foam is explained below.

  • Resilience

This is the springiness, flexibility or the elasticity of the mattress. This is determined by establishing the rebound or returning to the original normal of the mattress foam when a steel ball is released from a vertical height of 36-inches from the mattress top. The high-resilient (HR) foam will give a highball rebound effect when using the Ball Rebound Tester for foam materials. The more durable foam will return to its original form after being compressed. Less resistance equals better dampening or reduction of the force with visco-elastic memory foam. The less the rebound pressure opposing the energy or force means how far your body will sink into the visco-elastic memory foam. This results in a high-quality memory foam together with a lower high-resilient layer(s) on top giving better reduction of pressure points while retaining the added support under it.

  • Tensile

Tensile is the degree the foam can be stretched and calculated in pounds per square-inch (lbf/in2 or psi). A pressure gauge measures the pound-force per square inch. It also indicates the amount of stretching in length (similar to stretching out a rubber band before it snaps and breaks). This is not very important because memory foam mattresses are typically not stretched and the only time it is compressed is when it has someone lying down on it.

  • Flipping vs Rotating Mattresses

Mattress manufacturers recommend you flip your mattress over every 3 months to prolong the life of your mattress. The market offers no-flip mattresses, and those are discussed here. They have additional padding on the top side so it will never need to be flipped over to the other side. The bottom material is different from the top material. The no-flip models cost more, so you will need to decide if the every 3-month flipping is worth the additional cost to your budget.

  • Motion Transfer

You will want to decrease or have no motion transfer sleeping with your partner who tosses and flops around all night. You and your partner will not have a restful sleep when either of you feels the others movements, so you don’t want your mattress to transfer movement to the other side of the bed. Test this out by going to a mattress store getting off and on the mattress and turning over with your partner in tow. This will let you know what to buy on Amazon.com®.

  • Neutral Temperature

Superior and innovative foam mattresses will have cooling features for when you sleep to not be hot. Bargain-basement cheap mattresses use inferior and shoddy materials making it second rate when shopping. Be sure the mattress you are thinking about shows temperature neutrality on the labels, packing, or specifications online.

  • Edge Support

When sitting on the edge of the bed to put on your socks or sit there relaxing for whatever reason, you want your mattress to support you on the edge. Many of the better foam and innerspring mattresses use an encasement usually with a ropy type material or top-grade foam inside for support. Cheaper mattresses use a steel rod for the edge being hard and uncomfortable to your body. Many people sleep right on the edge and don’t want to feel the hard surface edge. Memory foam mattresses typically will not have edge support using superior foam designed to absorb the shape of your body when you sit or sleep on the edge.

  • Flame Retardants and Fire Safety

Mattresses sold in the USA have been complying since the 1970s by using anti-flammability materials. The most current standards used are set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission 16 CFR Part 1633, effective July 1, 2007. Fireproofing today uses a great amount of chemicals into the mattress material. Brominated and chlorinated flame-retardants “TRIS” were outlawed in the 1970s in sleepwear for children when they were known to cause mutagens. There is no government regulation preventing the use of flame retardant materials. The burden falls on the consumer. Be sure to check out the fire retardants, if used, in all mattresses.

[h2line id=”memory_foam_mattresses” h2-text=”Top 3 Memory Foam Mattresses“]

The good thing about memory foam mattresses is they rate at least as well as other mattresses for consumer approval and gratification. Above average are the aspects of motion isolation and conforming capability. They usually cost ±$1000 and are an excellent choice. However, when comparing memory foam with other mattress types, this mattress can retain heat, off gas, impede body movement, deficient in bounce, and take longer to break in. A memory foam mattress usually has at least 2-inches of memory foam over at least 6-inches of support foam.

[h2line id=”latex_mattresses” h2-text=”Top 2 Latex Mattresses“]

The good thing about latex mattresses is that they rate above average as other mattresses for consumer approval and gratification. You won’t have as many choices for latex mattresses as you will with memory foam mattresses. That is partially due to the process to manufacture latex, the white sap from rubber trees. Latex can help with many sleeping issues effectively. With the blend of resilient support and softness, latex can reduce painful pressure points and take care of sore and stiff muscles for better deep sleeping. Because of the support latex mattresses offer, orthopedic specialists and chiropractors suggest them. Latex beds are challenging to find in stores or online because of factors such as type of processing, natural or blended, and type. Stores carry limited amounts, another reason for shopping difficulty. The mattresses are all natural, synthetic, or blended latex.

[h2line id=”memory_foam_mattresses” h2-text=”Top 2 Gel Memory Foam Mattresses“]

Gel memory foam is indeed memory foam, but has a plusher feel to it. Identical to memory foam, it withstands transfer of motion when your partner thrashes about all night without being bothered by it meaning it has good motion isolation. Gel memory foam is comfortable and dependable as traditional memory foam. It’s different from memory foam by the way it’s made. When the foam is being made, it is infused with gel particles of beads. This gives better airflow for heat to be dissipated from your body giving a cooler surface when you sleep, a welcome benefit. The foam is balanced for firm support, yet you won’t sink too far into your mattress.

The mattress has 4 layers of foam. The high-density foam layer supports good air flow keeping the surface cool for when you sleep, not wanting to get overheated. The top pressure-reducing memory foam 2-inch layer gets rid of those pressure points while the second 2-inch orthopedic layer provides support. The third layer below that reduces tossing and turning. The base foam is 8-inches of high density foam and is adjustable for the platform you put it on. The foam is antimicrobial resisting dust mites, mold, and allergens.

The open cell foam is porous, meaning more open cells than visco elastic foam for more breathability. Air travels throughout the foams to remove body heat for a cool sleep.

Final Thoughts

Mattresses are a huge investment. You have many compelling reasons why you need the right mattress for you and your family’s relaxing sleep. This guide attempts to demystify the searching process everyone goes through looking for the best mattress. Take some time to read about the products here, read reviews, and do some research yourself.

Bed Bugs—do not buy used mattresses from newspaper ads, on Craig’s List, Angie’s List, or in used furniture stores! Not only are you sleeping on someone else’s problems, you will probably have an infestation of bed bugs. They are costly to eradicate professionally over many months. They can make you itch and turn red. They are nasty!

Budget—say nighty-night to over-priced, over-complicated mattresses and uncover the truth in pricing and manufacturing. Read the reviews written here to help you out. The best prices for mattresses are near holidays such as Memorial Day, President’s Day, the Fourth of July, and Memorial Day—and specifically in May, since that is the month mattresses are marked down in showrooms and online. January is a good time during the ‘white sales.’ Happy shopping and peaceful dreams!
